Walden University - EDUC 6510 Week 6 - Plagiarism

Turnitin, Grammarly, PlagScan, Duplichecker, Scribbr, PaperRater, and iThenticate are all types of software that can help detect plagiarism (Google.com, 2025, p. 1).  They each work by having a databank of prior written documents that are used to check new documents against. Assessments of the student's work must include rubrics for authenticity and originality of student work and require citation of use of another’s work where reasonable to do so. As a facilitator I would ask learners to write a short paragraph about originality in one’s work and the need professionally to cite the work of others when used. Citation not only gives credit to the original author of a work or construct or thought or conclusion but also helps trace where information came from. Tracing helps other scholars pursue additional research on the same matter by allowing them to trace the original work by following the citation title information such as author, date, and page.  Academic dishonesty can be prevented by ensuring no student receives credit for work plagiarized. Such as assigning a penalty for failure to cite or no credit when a sufficient amount of work submitted is not the work of the learner (Perkins et al, 2000, p. 1).

Giving learners access to citation methods early in the course and time to review citation requirements can help facilitate learning and guard against plagiarism either inadvertent plagiarism or intentional plagiarism.  I would ask other instructors to periodically spot check student work to see if they could detect plagiarism in a form I may have missed. Also making sure students who are aware of plagiarism by another student should be encouraged to discuss the matter with the instructor (Walden University, LLC., 2010).

  1. Hi Christopher,

You have made an excellent point about the importance of using tools like Turnitin and Grammarly to detect plagiarism. However, it's also important to consider that students may not always fully understand what constitutes plagiarism, especially when it comes to proper citation (Haynie, 2014). While these tools can help identify copied work, they may not catch cases of unintentional plagiarism. For instance, when students fail to paraphrase or cite a source properly. I have done this myself in the past. I did not fully understand how to cite sources properly, and the instructor informed me of my error and gave me resources to help me.
