Walden University EDUC 6145 Week 5 - Web Resources

Web Resource 1: Project Calculator.

https://elearningart.com/development-calculator/

eLearning Art (2024) has a project calculator for instructional design. The calculator has 4 steps:

1: Course Length

2: Development Time

3: Development Cost

4: Summary

The operator can enter different variables to determine cost outputs and time demands for the instructional program project. The only problem is it uses its own ratio of development time per minute of instructional time provided. These numbers are quite large and increase cost estimates. The value of the calculator is not to use the calculator for an actual project but a way to stop people from thinking for each hour of instruction provided only one hour of development time or 2 is needed. There is no perfect ratio of development time to instructional time output/delivered but the quality can be affected if less development time is used than needed.

Web Resource 2: Time Tracking Template for Instructional Design

Christy Tucker created an instructional design website to review different aspects of instructional design programs. On one page she created a template for Microsoft Excel program to use to estimate instructional design project costs. A hyperlink to a template is included below. The site is relatively advanced because she recommends using a pivot table which is not used by most Excel program users. The use of a pivot table requires training in how to use the table in Excel. One thing I have found about these types of web pages is the enthusiasm of the author creates greater enthusiasm in me to pursue instructional design work qualitatively.

  1. Thanks for highlighting these instructional design resources! The eLearning Art calculator is great for resetting expectations about the time and effort needed for quality development, even if its ratios feel high. Christy Tucker’s time tracking template, while advanced with pivot tables, is an incredibly practical tool for refining timelines and identifying bottlenecks. Both resources emphasize the importance of balancing time, cost, and quality, offering valuable insights for better project planning and management. Thanks for sharing these helpful tools!
